Intro

Whether I have a "knack" for finding crazy projects, or they find me is a debate all its own, but the fact remains, for better or worse, I'm pretty much always cooking up some hair-brained scheme or another. The results are often pretty ridiculous and, well, unnecessary, so naturally I thought of putting some of them up here!..

I'm always down to talk about ridiculous stuff! Drop me a line (evensareodds@trswanson.com) if any of the shinys has you so inspired!

"Authentic" Iron Throne Sculpture

Given my usual tendency toward erudite nerdom, I'm generally pretty impressed by HBO's take on "Game of Thrones." One thing that I do have to raise some issue with, however, is their interpretation of the iconic "Iron Throne." Forget timid symmetry, any proper Song of Ice and Fire fan will know, George R.R. Martin's actual vision is a seat of absolute power and dominance, not for the feint of heart. I was thus inspired one ill advised day to set about capturing this perilously commanding supremacy in the only medium that can truly do it justice: actual knives!

Availing myself, then, of the benefits of an Architecture studio's essentially inexhaustible supply of discarded X-Acto and Olfa blades ripe for the upcycling and a decent pair of work gloves, I got cracking, and this frightening little number was the ultimate result...

Pimped Nerf Gun

Pimped Nerf Gun

So my sister asked for a Nerf gun for Christmas.
Seemed a nice idea for the dorm room, but couldn't help feeling it was a bit boring...

The gift ended up being a couple days late, but I reckon it was worth it.

Everything's completely functional per the original, and it even disassembles and is compatible with other Nerf guns and parts.
Only problem now is I reckon I might need one for myself...

"Arsave" Pop-Up Desk

"Arsave" Pop-Up Desk

One Friday morning (amidst some blue-spinning-wheel-of-death-or-another), I read a piece on the company blog on standing workstations and the various implications and health factors they had. The over-simplified up shot was that, while its pretty obviously not super great for human beings to sit on their butts 8 (-14, seeing as we're architects...) hours a day, the ideal situation would be the one affording flexibility to variously stand or sit throughout the day. Naturally, by lunch, the idea had completely metastasized, and after a whirlwind pillage of Home Depot straight from the office and a similarly crazed weekend, I had a passable Frankenstein mock-up of a desktop module that can be raised and lowered as your tailbone sees fit.

A further summer (and several Lego Technic proof-of-concepts later) I had this much prettier, admittedly more reliable version.

It's constructed from steel-reinforced rigid polypropylene (read "shiny plastic with some bits of metal strapped to it"), has a closed profile of 4.3 cm, and a ratcheting latch system for extended heights ranging from 23.6 cm - 42.2 cm.

Guitar Case

Guitar Case

You might recognize the construction technique from the barrel tunnel of the Kitty Kondo, but when I found myself needing a guitar case I knew I wanted to push that rustic aesthetic to a more complex geometric experiment.

It only weighs about a shit ton, which I realize in hindsight is why you don't see more guitar cases from wood, and if I'm completely honest, the straps I stole from a Goodwill, Spiderman backpack probably leave a bit to be desired on the ergonomic front, but at the end of the day its proven to be enough of a conversation piece to make it on to this page.
